Windows 7 Essentials: Usability, Security and Manageability

This one-day instructor-led course provides students with the knowledge and skills to navigate Windows 7 and perform end-user level tasks. The course focuses on extrapolating the three design enhancements of Windows 7: usability, security, and manageability, with emphasis on exploring the new graphical user interface, and new features.


Before attending this course, students must have:

  • One year of experience installing, configuring, and supporting Windows desktop operating systems and applications.
  • Basic understanding of computing, applications, networking, and hardware.

This course is intended for IT professionals who have supported previous versions of Windows desktop operating systems and performed duties such as end-user support and desktop troubleshooting. The intended audience also includes information workers who use the Windows desktop operating system in an end-user capacity. After completing this module, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate usage of Start Menu Search
  • Navigate and customize the user interface
  • Summarize new interface features and enhancements, like Troubleshooting
  • Manipulate new file system features, such as Libraries and Search Connectors
  • Discuss the Network and Sharing Center as well as options for network troubleshooting
  • Describe new features, such as the Devices and Printers folder and Problem Steps Recorder
  • Discuss the benefits and requirements of DirectAccess, VPN Reconnect, and BranchCache

Module 2: Security Enhancements

  • Lesson 1: External Security
  • Lesson 2: Internal Security

After completing this module, students will be able to:

  • Explain how to configure User Account Control
  • Describe security features of Internet Explorer 9
  • Demonstrate how to configure Windows Firewall
  • Describe how to interpret and utilize the Action Center
  • Explain the different capabilities of both Standard User and Administrator account types
  • Describe built-in security functionality of Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials
  • Discuss the benefits and requirements of BitLocker Drive Protection

Module 3: Manageability Enhancements

  • Lesson 1: Management Tools
  • Lesson 2: Backup and Recovery

After completing this module, students will be able to:

  • Discuss the Windows Experience Index
  • Describe the features of the Reliability Monitor
  • Explain how to configure power plans and other power options
  • Discuss the benefits and requirements of AppLocker
  • Describe seven methods of Windows backup and data recovery
